Ambitious plans for a new sports and leisure centre in the north-east’s biggest town have won the backing of councillors.
Members of Aberdeenshire Council’s policy and resources committee supported in principal the proposals for a major new development at Peterhead’s Catto Park.
Officers asked the committee to support the idea of the project, while acknowledging that funding would still have to be found.
Peterhead FC is leading a drive to build a multimillion-pound leisure complex at its Balmoor Stadium home.
The long-awaited proposals were unveiled to the public last Tuesday night, after more than a year of planning and consultations with local groups.
The Scottish League Two champions said they are now looking for public support, to help persuade Aberdeenshire Council to get on board and help with funding.
In a report to the committee, Ritchie Johnson, the council’s director or communities, warned that there was no funding available at present to help with the high cost of the plans.
He said: “Indications from the community partners are that this project could cost in the region of £17million.
“With this in mind it has been suggested to the council that an indicative contribution of up to £4million may be requested at some time.
“Whilst it useful to have an idea of the potential financial involvement, the report is clear that at present there is no provision in the council budget for this.”
As the site is on common good land, the committee was warned that it may be difficult to get permission from the courts to use it for the project.
Edinburgh-based consultants PMR Leisure was tasked by the club with helping prepare a feasibility study and business plan, as well as negotiations with local groups.
The new centre, named the Catto Park Community and Sports Hub, would feature a range of indoor facilities including a sports hall, dance studio, gym and boxing ring.
There would also be space for a day centre for adults with learning and physical needs, which would be run by the local Willowbank charity.
Outside, there are plans for a synthetic pitch for rugby and football, as well as an upgraded running track. The Balmoor Stadium pitch would remain where it is, although other facilities at the site would be demolished.
