Visitors to a north-east Highland games event will have another chance to revel in Aberdeen Football Club’s Scottish League Cup victory.

Pittodrie vice-chairman George Yule will officially open the Oldmeldrum Sports and Highland Games on Saturday.

Aberdeen’s football stars are currently taking part in a training camp in Ireland before their Europa campaign but Mr Yule will be bringing the League Cup along with him.

The day will feature Highland dancing, displays by massed pipe bands and a tug o’ war competition as well as a Breakthrough Breast Cancer food fayre for the first time.

Gordon Forsyth, event secretary, said: “We are delighted that George Yule will be there to officially open the games.

“Due the recent successes of the club all the players will be in Dublin but George will be taking along the League Cup so that everyone can see it.

“There will also be a food fayre in the marquee where local produce will be on display.”

The Glenfiddich Heavy Events Championship will also be held as part of the event with traditional challenges such as weight over the bar, weight for distance and tossing the caber.

Oldmeldrum is the third event out of 12 in the heavy events calendar.

Royan Graham, of Glenfiddich, said: “The heavy athletes are on top form this year and the championship contest is already in full force. Bruce Robb, from Fife, has won the championship for the last five consecutive years so it will be exciting to see if he can score some more early points.”
