An Aberdeen couple’s rollercoaster of emotions after being victims of a break-in plummeted again last night.
Matt Duthie and Lindsey Cooper’s wedding plans were decimated when her custom-made band of gold was among the items taken.
Around £1,000 in cash, jewellery and electrical items, were also stolen on Sunday, between 1.20pm and 3.20pm.
Their despair turned to joy when Mr Duthie’s determination to track down the ring, by visiting possible outlets where it could have ended up being sold, paid off when he traced it.
Ms Cooper told the Press and Journal on Monday: “It was great news to get a call that the ring had been recovered, and even better to get it back at 5.30pm.”
They were devastated again last night, though, when it emerged that their home insurance is void because a window of their Walker Road property in Torry had been left open.
It means they will no longer be able to go on honeymoon following their September wedding.
Mr Duthie said: “I can’t put into words how I am feeling. Getting the rings back felt like everything was coming to a happy ending, we were thinking that we were covered, we had insurance.
“The money that was stolen was for our honeymoon to Florida and now we won’t be able to afford to go there when we wanted to.”
A spokesman for the insurance company involved, Esure, said: “Burglars don’t care what the money is for, they will take it and spend it anyway.
“The most basic fundamental of home insurance is that you keep everything locked that can be locked because otherwise somebody can just walk past and open the window.”
