A north-east town did not let a dull day dampen spirits for its annual May Day celebrations yesterday.
Now in its 27th year, the Turriff May Day Spectacular drew in bumper crowds for special activities and a farmers’ market.
The celebration is the season opener for a summer of events in the town, including the two-day agricultural show in August.
Dolina Mackenzie organises the event on behalf of the Turriff Business Association and said that this year’s May Day was one of the best yet.
She said: “It was an absolutely brilliant day and we have easily had around 4,000 people here throughout the day.
“It was lovely and warm despite a few spots of rain in the afternoon.
“Attractions like the climbing wall went down a storm and the businesses I’ve spoken to all said they did a roaring trade.
“It was definitely one of the best years we’ve ever had.”
The main streets of Turriff were transformed into a makeshift fairground for the day with activities including the Turra farmers’ market and a barbecue.
Music was provided by the award-winning Turriff and District Pipe Band, and Turriff’s own Silver Band.
Another start attraction was 2wit 2woo from the bird rescue centre near Huntly which brought along a selection of owls and raptors.
Despite technical issues with transport the display more than made up for the delayed arrival.
Visitors were given the chance to get up close and personal with the birds as they were able to have their picture taken with them.
First Minister Alex Salmond, who mingled with the crowd, said: “It was a terrific day out and I would like to congratulate the organisers, particularly Dolina, for what was truly a fun day for all the family.
“The Turriff May Day events have a long track record of success in promoting the community and in raising money for good causes. This year’s activities certainly lived up to their billing.”
