A night of dance, music and song is to be held to celebrate the arrival of the Queen’s Baton in Aberdeen.
Council organisers hope events held in Union Terrace Gardens on Monday will showcase the cultural vibrancy of the city.
2006 Commonwealth Games double gold medal winner David Carry, from Aberdeen, will carry the baton on to the stage to be welcomed by Lord Provost George Adam.
The garden’s entrance on Rosemount Viaduct will be the only access point open to the public from 5pm, with live entertainment on stage from 6pm through to 8pm.
Acts will include performances by The Great Northern Lights Chorus – a 100-strong acapella group – and Fusion Dance Company, who will perform at the Commonwealth Youth Dance Festival next month.
The free event is not ticketed and entry will operate on a first come, first served basis.
Up to 2000 spectators will be allowed access to Union Terrace Gardens with a large screen erected on Union Terrace to enable a further 8,000 to be part of the city’s Queen’s Baton Relay celebrations.
Earlier in the day residents will have a rare opportunity to be photographed with the baton as it passes through Robert Gordon University’s Garthdee campus.
Staff and students at the university have been invited to line the route and cheer on the baton bearers as they make their way round the campus.
Along the way the baton will pass the Streetsport team, who will run free outdoor football sessions, as well as 90 children from the Treehouse Nursery and 250 pupils from Kaimhill Primary School who will get a chance to touch the baton as it passes by.
The relay will pause at 12.55pm giving spectators the chance to take their own pictures with the baton in the reception area of RGU: SPORT.
