Councillors have approved plans for a recycling centre on the outskirts of a north-east town.
Existing facilities in Stonehaven cannot cope with the increase in rubbish, such as food waste and other recyclable materials, which requires to be sorted under Aberdeenshire Council’s integrated waste management strategy.
A new depot is planned for the town but is not due to become operational until 2017, so an interim recycling centre will be built at Redcloak.
Members of the Kincardine and Mearns area committee approved plans for the facility, which is estimated will cost £395,000. It is hoped it will be completed by February 2015 in time for new waste collections due to begin next March.
A planning application for the 82ft by 49ft waste storage centre is due to be submitted this month and construction could begin in October.
