An expert in the design, research and use of dementia-friendly spaces and therapeutic gardens has started his first Scottish project in Aberdeen.
Dr Garuth Chalfont is developing a blueprint for an outdoor area at the new Simeon Care for the Elderly development.
The 23-bed care home is currently under construction in the grounds of the organisation’s existing scheme at Bieldside.
The new garden is expected to cost about £100,000 and will include a terrace with views towards the River Dee, a hand-crafted wooden bridge, potting shed, food and flower patch, wildlife stations and personal patios leading from individual bedrooms.
Jeannie Carlson, Simeon Care for the Elderly manager, said the group was thrilled that Dr Chalfont, an internationally recognised specialist who has worked on projects in England and across the USA, had agreed to help them.
“With a fantastic facility planned, we recognised how important it was to make sure the outdoor space complemented that and were aware of the excellent work done by Garuth,” she said.
“We are delighted to have him as part of the team working on our project and are proud of the plans for the garden grounds, which promise to provide residents with a stimulating and enchanting space.”
Dr Chalfont said: “Since my first contact with Simeon I have been incredibly impressed by the energy and enthusiasm for the new facility and it is a pleasure to be able to play my part.
“Our plans for Simeon incorporate many engaging features and will really capture the imagination of residents and visitors alike – it is a very strong blend of science and art.”
