One of Aberdeenshire’s foremost listed buildings will provide the backdrop for a major adaptation of Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility.
The eighteenth century society tale tells the story of sisters Marianne and Elinor Dashwood and will be brought to life in a unique outdoor style in front of Banff’s Duff House.
Organisers hope the summer sunshine will encourage theatre goers to bring a picnic and enjoy an evening of Regency entertainment with friends and family on Wednesday, August 6.
Austen’s novel, which was first published in 1811, is one of the writer’s most popular works alongside Pride and Prejudice and has been the subject of several adaptations including a 1995 film starring Oscar winners Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet.
Historic Scotland operates the house and the organisation’s head of visitor experience Lorna Ewan said: “Duff House will provide a stunning backdrop for this special production of Sense and Sensibility.
“Sense and Sensibility is one of Jane Austen’s best loved works and generations have grown up with this tale of love and friendship, which has continued to have resonance with audiences through the centuries.
“The outdoor aspect brings a very different dimension to the story, which combined with the backdrop of the house, will provide the ingredients for a memorable evening.”
Although the tale of the Dashwood sisters was originally set in 18th century London and Kent, the Chapterhouse Theatre Company will present their version of events outside Banff’s grand Georgian estate.
The Chapterhouse Theatre Company is currently touring their production of Sense and Sensibilty and will also make a stop at Stirling Castle on Thursday, August 7.
This production forms part of Historic Scotland’s annual programme of events and this year is part of the 2014 Homecoming celebrations.
