A faulty generator was to blame for a fire at the site of Aberdeen City Council’s former headquarters last night.
Fire crews were called to the old St Nicholas House, off Broad Street, at 8.15pm.
Security staff alerted the emergency services to the blaze.
A city council spokeswoman said one of the authority’s own generators “malfunctioned” and caught fire, causing damage to an adjoining cabin.
The equipment has now been replaced, she added.
The 14-storey council office building was finally brought to the ground earlier this month after a lengthy demolition process.
Safedem, based in Dundee, are carrying out the demolition and site clearance work.
Plans have been tabled with the authority for a £107million hotel, office and retail complex, Marischal Square.
A public hearing is due to be held on August 28 to allow people opposed and in favour of the redevelopment to have their say in front of councillors on the planning development management committee.
The application, from Muse Developments, met the criteria for a hearing because of the council’s financial interest in the property and the large number of objections.
