A man has died in a crash on the A90 Aberdeen to Dundee road, say police.
The 43-year-old was travelling in a black BMW 328 Coupe when the accident happened on the northbound carriageway at Muchalls at 4.38am.
The vehicle struck a lamppost at the side of the road.
An electrician was called out to deal with concerns about live wires at the scene.
Police are now appealing for witnesses to the smash to contact them.
Sergeant Neil Morrison, from the Aberdeenshire Road Policing Unit, said: “Investigations into the cause of the collision are at an early stage and I would urge anyone who witnessed the collision and hasn’t spoken to police to do so.
“Additionally, anyone who may have seen the vehicle prior to the incident is asked to contact us.”
The fire service said that they cut one person free from the wreckage of the vehicle.
Two appliances from Stonehaven and one from Altens attended the scene.
The road was closed to northbound traffic for several hours after the accident but has now reopened.
