A group of conmen operating in the north-east are duping people out of hundreds of pounds by claiming they have cheap iPads and other electrical goods for sale.
Police have warned people to be aware of the rip off, after buyers were left with boxes of old catalogues and paper instead of the items they thought they had paid for.
Shoppers in Aberdeen and Peterhead have been duped by the fraudsters, with around half-a-dozen people losing money to the scam after being offered the cut-price goods.
After being shown the items in the street, the buyers hand over cash and are handed over a box which appears to be genuine.
However, it then emerges that the packaging is stuffed with catalogues and other items to give it weight.
Sergeant Drew Sharp, of the city centre community policing team, said: “I would urge anyone who is approached in the street by someone offering goods for sale to be extremely cautious and if it seems too good to be true, it probably is and is not worth the risk.
“We have had reports of this happening in the Guild Street, Craigie Street and Great Northern Road areas of Aberdeen but believe other people may have fallen victim to this scam.”
