A north-east father has been left in a coma after he was involved in a collision with a lorry in Texas.
Alex Adams suffered a fractured skull and a broken arm and leg in the horrific accident, which happened as he travelled to work.
The 33-year-old prison officer is originally from Aberdeen and grew up in the Marchburn area, but moved to America four years ago after meeting his wife Sara.
The couple have a two-year-old daughter, Amy, while Mr Adams is step-father to seven-year-old Rhiannon.
He also has a 14-year-old daughter from a previous relationship.
Last night, his older brother, Allan, said the family had travelled from their homes at Garthdee to be at his bedside.
“The neurologist said there is brain damage of some sort, but they are not going to know what kind of brain damage until he wakes up – if he wakes up,” he said.
Mr Adams’s sister-in-law, Joanie, said everyone was finding it hard to come to terms with what had happened since receiving the devastating phone call about the accident.
“It still feels like a dream and we’re just trying to get our heads round the whole thing,” she said.
“Words cannot describe the devastation we are all feeling.”
Friends in America have now launched a fundraising appeal to help the family as Mr Adams’s wife keeps a vigil by his bedside.
His brother said: “Bearing in mind hospital bills, commuting back and forth to the hospital as well as getting the girls to school, Sara has not been able to work since the accident as she has spent every minute she can by her husband’s side.”
