The winning design has been chosen for Aberdeen’s “secret” wild dolphin sculpture.

Amanda Montague’s Tartan Tam was chosen from all the public entries as the judges’ favourite.

The smaller sculpture will now join the other 50 wild dolphins at tonight’s auction in the Music Hall, before being put on public display in Aberdeen for a week.

The 25-year-old Bridge of Don resident said: “It is such a nice surprise and lovely news. I really wasn’t expecting it at all.

“The Wild Dolphins trail has been a great thing for Aberdeen. I wasn’t able to see them all on the trail but I went to Marischal College at the weekend to see them all. And that is when I decided to do a tartan one as there wasn’t one there.

“I have always loved tartan and being from Scotland it is something that is unique to us. It represents different families and clans.”

The 51st dolphin was unveiled last week and members of the public were invited to submit their designs. The winner was chosen by Nexen Petroleum UK Ltd, which is sponsoring the auction.

Steve Regulski, the company’s chairman of donations, said: “From the vast number of creative entries, we decided that the tartan design would be a great option for the final dolphin and will produce a truly striking piece of artwork.

“Traditional tartan draws on the colours of the Scottish landscape and wildlife which reminds of what this campaign has been all about.”

Tartan Tam will be auctioned off tonight, along with the rest of his pod, to raise money for the Archie Foundation and Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC).
