Cyclists have made a fresh plea for safety improvements to roads in Aberdeen after a father-of-three was killed as he pedalled through the city last weekend.
Neil Jaffrey, 32, died after a collision with a silver BMW on North Anderson Drive on Sunday.
Mr Jaffrey, who was also known as Eddie, is survived by his wife Dawn, daughter Jessica, 2, and seven-week-old twins Faye and Isla.
He lived in Aberdeen but was originally from Huntly.
While a police investigation continues, cycling groups in Aberdeen have called for a review of the current provisions in place for cyclists.
One campaigner said that, while established routes were in place, drastic improvements were required.
John Baghurst, chairman of the Cycling Tourists’ Club Grampian, said: “Even where there are facilities in place, there are problems with them.
“For example, some cycle lanes have got street furniture right in the middle, if you come along the path in the dark you could crash right into them.
“You wouldn’t have a lamp post sitting in the middle of the inside lane of a dual carriageway, so why have it in the cycle lane?
“There has to be shared footpaths and cycle paths introduced, so cyclists aren’t having to mingle with the traffic.”
Neil Innes – organiser of the Ride the North cycling event which takes place in August each year – also called for better infrastructure.
Mr Innes said: “From my point of view, every cyclist would want to see roads being safer in the city in particular.
“Everyone would want to see more dedicated cycling infrastructure with a view to more people using it.
“It’s not a problem for which there’s an instant solution, if cycling infrastructure was to improve it’s something that would need a lot of planning and a bit of investment.
“In the very short term, there’s a need for creating more awareness amongst drivers about cyclists on the road and the space they need. It cuts both ways of course because there’s drivers who complain about cyclists’ behaviour on the roads.”
A spokeswoman for Aberdeen City Council said she could not comment directly on the issue while inquiries continued into Mr Jaffrey’s death.
She said: “It would be inappropriate to comment while a live police investigation is ongoing into the fatal accident.”
