Ofcom advises Aberdeen businesses on dealing with phone number changes

Adding an area code when calling Aberdeen city landlines has been nearly trouble free.

Because of a move by communications regulator Ofcom, all calls to city phones must now include the 01224 area code.

With populations increasing in Aberdeen and across the UK, freeing up phone numbers for landlines has quickly become an issue for Ofcom, and the move to have residents call full 11-digit numbers will free up to 200,000 phone numbers per area introduced.

An Ofcom spokeswoman said: “I’m not aware of any complaints that have come in to us to do with the changes in Aberdeen.

“We’ve already gone through with the scheme in Bournemouth, where 94% of residents remained unconcerned with the changes, so we fully expect it to go well in Aberdeen.

“We don’t foresee it becoming an issue, as people in Aberdeen are already used to using 01224 before calls from their mobiles.”

A spokesman for BT shared Ofcom’s sentiment saying: “I’ve not heard of any problems so far.

“People get a pre-recorded message for free if they forget the code, so it’s going to be a straightforward transition that won’t cause any problems.”

However, an Aberdeen communications business has said that the business community may face troubles with the change.

Gordon Adie, managing director at Arrowdawn, said: “The change has only been in place for one day, but we’ve certainly already had one of our oil and gas clients contact us to adapt their system to the new codes.

“Companies won’t notice any problems until they experience them, so I strongly suspect that more and more companies will get in touch with us soon.

“Often firms will have their entire phone systems configured for speed and ease of use.

“If the area code was not inputted at the time of entry then these could all be rendered useless.”

The changes to phone numbers will not affect the cost of any calls.
