An unusual north-east eatery will be opened to support a memorial fund set up following the tragic death of Aberdeen teenager Shomi Miah.
Council planners are considering proposals to convert a disused public toilet block in Turriff into a pizza parlour.
Now the restaurateurs behind the bizarre project have said the business will be run as a social enterprise, with all profits given to the memorial fund set up in their sister’s name.
Shomi was 17 when she died of meningococcal septicaemia in October 2004.
Hours before, an NHS 24 nurse had told her family to give the Harlaw Academy pupil painkillers because she probably had the flu.
A fatal accident inquiry later criticised the medical helpline for failing to identify the life-threatening condition.
Since Shomi died from the illness, her family have embarked on a major fundraising mission to help raise funds for Meningitis UK and a health clinic for the poor in Bangladesh.
Now Jabir Miah is working to launch a social enterprise in Turriff.
Mr Miah said: “All of the profit is solely going into the Shomia Miah Memorial Fund. All the profits are going to charity.
“We’ve got high expectations and goals with the foundation. Shomi considered being a doctor so we’re hoping to fund a private hospital and education centre in Bangladesh.
“There, the only way to go to school is if you can pay for it.”
The toilet conversion would transform the derelict public convenience in Duff Street into a modern takeaway.
Inspired by new ventures in Edinburgh and Glasgow, the proposed eatery would offer a “take and heat” service by which food would be cooked fresh and cooled so customers could take it home to eat later.
The plans have received two objections from Turriff residents, raising concerns about late-night traffic, noise and litter.
Mr Miah said that his preliminary discussions with council planners had been positive, and that he would work to overcome the objections.
He added: “The toilet block is a great size and in a great location in Turriff. It’s about using a dead landscape and making it attractive.”
