Two hundred children in the city have been given a free Aberdeen FC strip thanks to the generosity of the shirt’s sponsor.
Saltire Energy, which supplies drilling tools to offshore companies, shared out 200 Dons’ tops between Aberdeen Lads Club and the club’s own community trust.
Eighty-five shirts were given to Aberdeen Lads Club (ALC), a voluntary organisation based in the Tillydrone area which supports youngsters living in less well off neighbourhoods.
A further 150 shirts were given to the Aberdeen FC Community Trust (AFCCT) School Holiday Programme, which provides one day coaching events to primary school pupils from disadvantaged communities.
Angie Johnston, ALC manager, said: “Aberdeen Lads Club aims to work with young people who have low personal and social skills and who are at risk of exclusion through antisocial behaviour, lifestyle choices or lack of opportunities.
“The young people are so delighted with their AFC shirts and we are very grateful to Saltire Energy for the company’s kind donation.”
Ally Prockter, chief executive of AFC Community Trust, added: “This is a fantastic gesture by Saltire Energy which clearly demonstrates a commitment by AFC’s new sponsor to support both the football and community aspects of the club.
“AFC Community Trust has been set up as a standalone charity to provide support and opportunity to local communities, especially those in need of a bit of extra help.
“The trust is delighted to be able to deliver some football programmes free of charge this summer, as we are committed to enabling far more participation in sport and of course allowing children to just enjoy themselves.”
Saltire Energy established its Saltire in the Community project in 2008 and is committed to supporting disadvantaged young people in the area.
