An Aberdeenshire couple will host a fundraiser to support the children of Gaza this weekend.
Cara Potts and her husband Tavis were spurred into action after hearing stories about the conflict from activist friends living in the Palestinian enclave.
Mrs Potts said she had been particularly upset about children being killed and orphaned and decided it was time to turn her “compassion into action” and started planning the “music and artivism” event.
Giggin for Gaza, which will be held at The Tunnels in Aberdeen on Saturday, will include performances from local bands including the Chandeliers, DOC, Sage and Sons o’ the Soil, as well as a DJ.
Photographs from Gaza will be on show, with films and readings also on the agenda.
There will also be a chance to talk to Mrs Potts’s friends about the realities of the conflict.
Mrs Potts, of Tertowie, Kinellar, said: “My husband couldn’t cope with seeing me crying all the time, we’ve got friends on the ground in Gaza so were hearing and seeing lots of stories.
“The tears had to stop, and we decided to put this compassion into action by doing a charity event of our own.
“The art is very powerful and speaks to people without words. Some of the art we have is outstanding, it’s poignant and potent.
“This is about raising money for charity, not taking sides – that’s not the onus for us.”
All the money raised will be donated to the Palestine Trauma Centre (PTC), which works to support mental health and community workers in Gaza as they deal with the community.
Mrs Potts added: “We’ve been so touched by the number of donations we’ve had from people who can’t make it along. My husband is Australian, so we’ve had money from there and France, all over – this conflict has touched a lot of people because of the impact it has had on children.”
The arty side of the fundraiser gets underway at 6pm, before the music starts at 7.30pm.
