The incident happened at Mackie Academy, Stonehaven, at around 8.30am. Two fire crews were called to the scene from Stonehaven fire station, and tackled the fire using two hose reel jets and two breathing apparatus. No one was injured in the fire, which was contained before 9am. No children were said to be aboard the bus when the fire – which started in the vehicle’s engine – broke out. The entrance to the school was closed while firefighters tackled the blaze. A police spokeswoman said: “Fire and rescue confirmed no one was on board, it was an engine fire, there was no criminality.” There was no requirement to close the nearby Slug Road.
