A leading north-east charity has marked World Homeless Day by paying tribute to the public for their support and donations.
Aberdeen Cyrenians has been inundated with food packages donated by schools, churches and organisations across the north-east as part of recent harvest celebrations.
The charity has drafted in teams of volunteers from a number of companies, including Wood Group and Conoco Phillips, to help sort and store the donations in preparation for the busy festive period.
The teams have given up their spare time to restock the cupboards with everything from tins of soup to bags of dried pasta, with more items still arriving each day. The amount of food donated is expected to exceed last year’s total of £5,000.
Scott Baxter, deputy chief executive of the charity, said: “Year on year, we are completely blown away by the support shown towards the charity by organisations celebrating the harvest festival, and the donations that come in as a result of this really are something.
“We’ve had great support from the corporate sector in helping us sort and store the donations so that they are ready for use. As you can imagine, it’s quite challenging to account for this level of food arriving at our premises but they’ve done a great job and I really can’t thank them enough.
“Aberdeen Cyrenians has always been well supported by people across the north-east – without this support, we really wouldn’t be able to offer the level of help and services we currently provide.”
