Hope for safer roads after new safety measure installed at Cortes

Flashing road signs have been installed at notorious bend on one of the north-east’s busiest road.

The illuminated warnings on the A90 are at the spot where a 40-tonne truck went out of control, careered off the road and landed in the roof of a house.

The signs on the Fraserburgh-Peterhead stretch of the route at Cortes are activated by oncoming vehicles.

They were installed by roads agency Bear Scotland and the move has been welcomed by north-east politicians.

Residents held talks with road chiefs following the lorry incident.

Banffshire and Buchan Coast MSP Stewart Stevenson said he was pleased Bear officials had listened to their concerns and taken action.

He added: “This additional warning for drivers will I’m sure help remind them that they should take care and travel at a sensible speed at this bend.”

His SNP colleague, Fraserburgh councillor Charles Buchan, said he hoped they would highlight to motorists the importance of sticking to safe speeds.

He said: “I’m pleased that Bear Scotland has installed these state-of-the art-chevrons, warning traffic of the really dangerous bend at Cortes.

“They have been some time in coming and some solution to the problem was really needed. Let us hope that they make all drivers aware of the perils of taking the corner at more than 30 mph.”

The road near the village has been the scene of several accidents in the past.

In September last year, a 42-year-old driver died after a two-vehicle crash, and a 41-year-old pedestrian was killed when he was struck by a car in January.

In May, a woman motorist suffered head injury when her vehicle and a lorry collided.

A 30mph limit was placed on the bend after last year’s fatal crash.
