Families visiting a north-east country park this weekend will be able to join the search for red squirrels.
Over the last week, the bushy-tailed creatures have been spotted every day at Haddo Country Park, near Tarves, giving visitors the ideal chance to see them scurrying among the trees.
On Saturday, visitors can learn how to look for signs of life, by identifying tracks and determining if a pine cone has been nibbled by a squirrel, a mouse or a bird.
They will then head into the park with an expert guide to help them search.
Haddo visitor services officer Diana Spencer said: “We love seeing the red squirrels at Haddo, especially at this time of year when they’re busy collecting food for winter.
“They’re quite fearless and will often sit up in the trees just a few feet away.
“Red squirrels can be seen anywhere in the park, but they can be tricky to spot so it’s great to go out with an expert who knows exactly what to look for.”
Search for a Squirrel starts at 9.30am and will be led by Steve Willis from Saving Scotland’s Red Squirrels (SSRS).
There are currently about 121,000 red squirrels in Scotland, accounting for 75% of the entire UK population.
SSRS is campaigning to raise awareness of the animals’ plight and has warned that without sustained action, they could become extinct on mainland Scotland.
