Two people were arrested in Aberdeen yesterday for allegedly breaching immigration rules.
Home Office Immigration Enforcement officers visited the A & C Smart Convenience Store in King Street at about 8.10am.
A member of staff, a 30-year-old Indian man, was questioned about his immigration status.
He was subsequently arrested for allegedly working illegally, has been detained and now faces removal from the country.
As part of the same operation, a 25-year-old Indian woman was also arrested at a home in nearby Mary Elmslie Court for allegedly being an immigration offender.
She was later released and must report regularly to the Home Office until she is also removed.
Stephen Roarty, of Home Office Immigration Enforcement, said: “Illegal working is not victimless. It defrauds the taxpayer, undercuts honest employers and cheats legitimate job seekers out of employment opportunities.
“We are happy to work with businesses to let them know what checks need to be made on staff, but those who break the law should know that they will face the consequences.
“I would urge people with specific and detailed information about suspected illegal working to contact us.”
