Boxers from a booming amateur club were last night in preparation for a crack at a world title – in skipping.
Young athletes from Peterhead Boxing Club are targeting a number of world skipping records and – as a warm up – skipped for two hours non-stop in a bid to raise funds.
The club, which now boasts more than 100 members, was set up to encourage young people to take up the sport, and support youngsters with troubled personal lives.
Speaking during last night’s skipathon at Peterhead Community Centre, senior member Sam Masson said: “Initially about 15 of our members started skipping tonight.
“We’re 30 minutes into it now and those left skipping just now are our seniors. They’re just getting into the grove. They’ll easily make it over one hour, and some will push for longer.”
She explained that the participants are allowed a one minute break every 15 minutes to take on fluids.
“People do not realise how difficult skipping can be. This is about raising money for the club, and raising awareness.
“You look at the Rocky films, with Stalone starting in smelly backstreet gyms. That was us until a few months ago. Now we’ve got a bit of money behind us and we’re going for the records.”
Hosting an official world record attempt could cost the club several hundred pounds as an official auditor is required.
Although several donations are still to come in, the club expects to have raised more than £200 last night.
