Aberdeen residents ‘can’t sleep’ after two cars set on fire during late-night attacks

Cars have been set alight on Oldcroft Place and Oldcroft Gardens.
Cars have been set alight on Oldcroft Place and Oldcroft Gardens.

Residents of an Aberdeen street have been left unable to sleep at night after two cars were torched in “random” late-night attacks.

One of the victims spoke out after his car was torched on Sunday, January 16 on Oldcroft Place.

The resident, who does not wish to be named, was awoken by blue flashing lights and looked outside to see his car on fire outside his flat on Oldcroft Place.

Fire crews had been called at around 5am to deal with the blaze and he explained that his car has been written off.

On Wednesday, January 19 another car was set alight on the street adjacent, Oldcroft Gardens. This car was parked in a carpark and at around 1am neighbours were alerted to the vehicle engulfed in flames.

The resident says his wife is now struggling to sleep following the fires.

Most recently, the resident’s son realised a neighbour’s car had its windows smashed in on Tuesday, February 25.

The resident explained that he has lived on Oldcroft Place for around four years and has never experienced anything like this.

According to him, no one on the street knows what is happening and they feel as though they are being “kept in the dark”.

He said: “My wife can’t sleep at night and if I get up during the night to go for a drink or something I’ll go to the window to see if there is anyone walking about.

“To tell you the truth, you think you’re going to wake up in the middle of the night and another car will be on fire.”

He added: “Nobody got hurt, that’s the main thing.”

One of the cars being towed away.

Inquiries ongoing into ‘wilful’ fireraising

A police spokeswoman confirmed that two cars had been set alight in the area and that another vehicle had been vandalised, causing “significant damage”.

She said: “Police are investigating after two cars were deliberately set alight in Aberdeen between Sunday, 16 January and Wednesday, January 19.

“Around 5.25am on Sunday, January 16 police and emergency services were called to a report of a car on fire outside an address on Oldcroft Gardens, Aberdeen.

“On Wednesday, January 19 another car outside a different address on Oldcroft Gardens was also set alight.

“Both vehicles were significantly damaged.

“Officers are treating the fires as wilful and inquiries in to both incidents are continuing.

“On Wednesday, January 26 a report was made to police that a car had been vandalised on Forresterhill Road.  Inquiries are continuing.”
