James Lyall was knocked down by a car on a pedestrian crossing in the town’s King Street at about 3.15pm. The 82-year-old, of Inverbervie, was taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary under police escort, but could not be saved. The 36-year-old driver of the black Audi, who was heading south, was uninjured in the crash. Onlookers said the driver appeared to have hit Mr Lyall after being dazzled by the low winter sun. Police closed the road for several hours while they tried to piece together the circumstances surrounding the accident. Officers are appealing for anyone who witnessed the accident, or the lead up to it, to contact them on 101.
