An Aberdeen doctor who specialises in treating leukaemia and other blood disorders has been hailed a hero of the NHS in Scotland.
Dr Derek King, a consultant at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital, received the accolade at the Scottish Health Awards in Edinburgh.
He was praised for his career-long commitment to providing outstanding care and giving hope to patients.
Dr King, a haematologist, also assists survivors of childhood cancer in their long term recovery.
He has worked in NHS Grampian for 36 years and has been a consultant for 28 of these.
Dr King said: “I am very pleased to have won this award and I see it primarily a reflection of the high quality service that is provided by NHS Grampian.”
Deputy Chief Executive of NHS Grampian Pauline Strachan said “Our sincerest congratulations go to Dr King. His deep care and compassion and tireless dedication are exemplary. His recognition is richly deserved.”
