The mother of an Aberdeenshire teenager killed in a bike accident is appealing for help to keep his memory alive.
Connor Shields was cycling home to Ellon after a day out with friends in July last year when he was hit by a car.
The 14-year-old was airlifted to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary following the accident on the A975 Newburgh to Cruden Bay road, but could not be saved.
On the first anniversary of Connor’s death, his mother Janet – who is determined her son should be remembered as a positive, sensible and helpful young man – launched an online blog for young people.
But although the team behind Connor’s Crew has managed to upload some content, they have hit some teething problems and are now looking for someone with IT expertise to help them develop the site to allow teenagers to contribute to it directly.
Mrs Shields and some friends will moderate the blog – which has various sections such as art, photography, writing, music, reviews, gaming and even a problems page – but her idea is for the young visitors to be able to upload posts and interact with each other.
The blog was created with input from Connor’s friends, and Mrs Shields is keen to get a volunteer with some online knowledge to help make their plans a reality.
She said: “Since we launched Connor’s Crew, it’s been really hard. We’ve had some problems getting things on the site. We’ve had a lot of people viewing the site, but now we need some help to get the momentum going again.
“We’ve got all these ideas and we just need someone to help us get them all online.
“Teenagers have such a hard time of it and I think this is something nice for them to have. Connor was always helping his friends, and I really want this to be a success.
“I’ve felt at a loss since Connor’s death, and found strength in working on something that would please him and make him smile.”
Mrs Shields, of Craigpark Place, Ellon, hopes the website will eventually garner enough attention to create a memorial fund in Connor’s name, which would be used to promote safety and happiness among teenagers.
