A fire at a fish factory in Fraserburgh was initially thought to have caused much more damage, Scottish Fire and Rescue have said.
Twenty-five firefighters tackled the flames at G&J Jack fish factory on Harbour Road, which started at around 7pm.
The blaze at the two-storey metal clad building was ‘well developed’ on the crew’s arrival, three jets were used to extinguish the fire.
Station Manager Mike Cordiner, incident commander at the scene said: “In the early stages I thought we were going to lose a large part of the building.”
“When appliances first arrived they were faced with a developing fire with large quantities of thick black smoke issuing from the roof vents of the large two storey building.”
The team endured thick black smoke and intense heat on the inside of the factory, and torrential rains and high winds on the outside.
Mr Cordiner: “The crews from Fraserburgh, Maud and Macduff should be very proud of the fact that they have saved the vast majority of the building, protecting the livelihoods and jobs of the people who work there.”
Throughout the incident, the aerial platform from Aberdeen’s Central fire station stood by in case the fire broke through the roof.
