Top swimmer Hannah Miley yesterday helped launch a festive stay safe campaign in Aberdeen.

The Commonwealth Games gold medallist was in the city centre for the start of Operation Oak’s winter strategy.

By working alongside more than 70 partner agencies the operation works to ensure people stay safe when out shopping or socialising over the Christmas and New Year period.

Hannah said: “After a busy year I will of course be looking to spend time celebrating the festive season with my family and friends but I’ll be doing so responsible and I hope others will be too.

“I don’t drink myself, but I have two younger brothers and I want to ensure their safety.”

Chief Superintendent Adrian Watson said: “Last year this operation brought crime down by a third and we are expecting the same fall again this year.

“Our task is supported by the fire service and NHS Grampian and also politically.”

With the city likely to attract more than 35,000 visitors over the festive period, Mr Watson said: “Through office nights out and shopping an evening economy is created. We ensure police presence to make this safe.”

Chairman of Aberdeen Community Safety Partnership councillor Martin Greig said: “This excellent team work has resulted in some marked improvements to the quality of life in the city centre.

“Unfortunately, there will always be that small number of trouble-makers whose antisocial activity disrupts the peace and the fun that everyone else wants to enjoy.

“To tackle this problem, we need to keep up the momentum of Operation Oak.”

Participants in the scheme include Police Scotland, Aberdeen Street Pastors, Scottish Ambulance Service, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service group and businesses are collectively represented by Aberdeen Inspired.
