The father of an Aberdeen teenager diagnosed with a rare bone cancer last night thanked Marcliffe owner Stewart Spence for donating £14,000 to the Teenage Cancer Trust (TCT).
Gary Cox, who runs Aberdeen’s Northern Hotel and Edwards nightclub in Inverurie, said he had been both “very shocked and pleasantly surprised” when he found out about the generous donation.
Mr Cox’s daughter Abigail, 19, was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma – a condition which affects children and adolescents, in February.
She is currently undergoing chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
Her treatment has been aided by the work of the TCT and her plight inspired a fundraising campaign by the Aberdeen City and Shire Hotels Association, which pledged to raise £20,000 for the charity.
Mr Cox said: “The most important thing is to raise awareness of this condition. That is the message we want to get across.
“If this can happen to my daughter, it can happen to anybody.”
Mr Spence, who lost his daughter Jackie to cancer five years ago, said: “We decided to give half of the ticket money to charity – it seemed a nice way to finish the thing.”
