Aberdeen City Council has offered all of its staff the chance to re-train as primary school teachers to tackle a major shortage.
Council bosses say they will pay the cost of tuition fees – up to £1,320 per person – and guarantee people a job at the end of training.
Angela Taylor, lead councillor for education and children’s services, said Aberdeen was suffering a “severe shortage” of teachers.
“We hope this will alleviate the problem,” she said.
“A major issue is trying to get people into Aberdeen and for a new teacher trying to fund private rent on a public sector salary.”
An e-mail was sent to council employees saying the local authority would offer those interested an 18 month course at Aberdeen University that would allow them to continue with their current job.
