Plans to replace the north-east’s maternity hospital with a women’s hospital will be discussed today.
Members of the NHS Grampian board will also consider plans for a cancer treatment centre, which would build on the services already offered in Aberdeen.
Today, members will be asked to approve plans and funding for the project structures.
It is hoped the cancer centre will be opened in December 2019, with the women’s hospital replacing Aberdeen Maternity Hospital by the following year.
The projects have been awarded a total of £120million from the Scottish Government’s national delivery plan programme.
The work will be carried out as part of the wider Foresterhill masterplan, which included the development of Aberdeen Dental School, the Suttie Centre and a new radiotherapy centre.
The cancer centre, which is expected to be set up next to the radiotherapy centre at the south-east of the ARI site, will include outpatient, day care, support, academic and research facilities.
The women’s hospital, which will be linked to Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital and ARI, will replace the maternity hospital and its neonatal unit, gynaecology and other services.
A report states: “There will be comprehensive redesign and improvement process applied to cancer and women’s services to ensure that the new facilities are designed around the future needs of the services and patients, and the most clinically efficient way of working.”
Detailed plans and exact locations are expected to come forward next year, with the board expecting to seek planning consent between June and September.
