Police investigating a horrific car crash which left a young woman dead are waiting to release the victim’s name.
The woman, who only recently celebrated her 22nd birthday, was driving on the A952 near Toll of Birness on Monday morning when her white Vauxhall Corsa was involved in a head-on collision with a Volvo 4X4.
Despite the best efforts of emergency crews, the woman died of her injuries at the scene. The male driver of the silver Volvo XC90 was taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.
His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening and no one else was injured in the incident.
It is understood the Corsa driver was not local to the north-east.
A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “Appliances from Peterhead, Maud and Ellon attended the scene of the collision at the Halfway House on the A952 Ellon to Mintlaw road at 7.34am.
“Crews used hydraulic cutting equipment to free one casualty who was placed in the care of paramedics.
“Sadly one person died at the scene and also required to be freed from the vehicle by crews.”
Police are still appealing for witnesses of the rush hour crash to come forward.
