A man convicted of killing a baby will stay behind bars after a second bid to clear his name was thrown out.
Mark Simpson was jailed for 20 years in 2010, after a jury found him guilty of murdering tiny Alexis Matheson.
Earlier this year, the 32-year-old killer applied to the Scottish Criminal Cases Review Commision (SCCRC) for his case to be examined.
But the legal body has now confirmed Simpson’s case has been refused for a full review.
Now he will only be able to have his case looked at again if new information comes to light.
The former bin man was found guilty of murdering six-week-old Alexis by shaking her, squeezing her and compressing her chest on various occasions.
She was taken to hospital after she was discovered lifeless at the home in Deansloch Crescent, Aberdeen, that Simpson shared with the baby’s mother – his former girlfriend, Ilona Sheach
A jury found him guilty of murder, despite his attempts to blame Miss Sheach for inflicting the injuries on Alexis, who died in an Edinburgh hospital on December 10, 2007.
She suffered 40 separate injuries, including fractures to all but four of her ribs.
During his seven-week trial, Simpson was called a “disgusting liar” and was accused of making up stories about Alexis’s mother to “save his own neck”.
This was Simpson’s second application to the SCCRC with his previous bid refused in 2012.
