A man has been jailed after he was caught with bags of cannabis that he intended to churn into butter.
Ramsey Smith, 25, was arrested by police in Aberdeen’s Rosemount Square with a backpack containing nearly 90 grams of cannabis.
Aberdeen Sheriff Court heard that the cannabis was of “mixed quality” and that Smith had intended to turn it into “cannabis butter”.
Police found four bags of cannabis and packs of packs of diazepam within Smith’s bag.
He pleaded guilty to one charge of being in possession of cannabis and another charge of possessing diazepam on August 8 2019.
Smith also admitted three counts of breaching a bail condition not to leave his home on April 3 last year.
Police were alerted to strong smell of cannabis
Fiscal depute Lewis Devoy told the court that police were on mobile patrol when they noticed a “strong smell of cannabis” from a stairwell, but were unable to pinpoint where it was coming from.
“At this point, the accused presented himself at the front door and later left the property with a rucksack,” Mr Devoy said.
“He was searched by officers who found him to be in possession of four bags of cannabis and three blister packs of diazepam.”
Mr Devoy said that the amount of cannabis in the backpack was found to be around 89 grams.
But added that no value could be attributed to the cannabis as it was of “mixed quality”.
Not very smokeable
Defence agent Laura Gracie told the court that her client had come into possession of a cannabis “by-product” and was “going to make it into cannabis butter”.
She added: “He has told me that the value of it would have been minimal and would not have been very smokeable.
“He was using heroin and crack cocaine and had got himself into a difficult situation.”
Ms Gracie also told the court that Smith, who was sentenced to 18 months in prison last month for stealing and joyriding top-end cars and stealing power tools, has since undertaken a detox programme.
She added: “I ask that the court imposes the most minimal sentence and does not tack anymore on to his current sentence.”
Sheriff Lesley Johnston sentenced Smith, of Glenbervie Road, Aberdeen, to 60 days imprisonment, which will run concurrent to his sentence in April.
