As concerns continue about record fuel costs across the UK, huge variances between the prices at the pumps are continuing across Aberdeen.

Shell, which has six petrol stations across Aberdeen, is charging various prices depending on their location in the Granite City – varying by as much as 13p in just a three-mile radius.

Fuel prices are rising and are likely to rise even further, with prices increasing from Monday’s average of 178.5p for petrol and 185.2p for diesel to 183.2p for petrol and 188.8p for diesel on Friday.

The Press and Journal went to each of Shell’s forecourts across the Aberdeen to compare the fuel prices on Friday.

What are Shell prices in Aberdeen?

A 13p difference per litre can make it up to £8.45 more expensive to fill up the tank in an average family-sized car.

In the north of Aberdeen at Shell’s Propeller station on Bucksburn’s Inverurie Road, it cost 184.9p for a litre of petrol and 189.9p for diesel.

It was more expensive at the chain’s two garages on Wellington Road, with the Redmoss one at 187.9p and 188.9p and neighbours Wellington charging 187.9p and 189.9p respectively.

However, the biggest differnce between Shell stations was a 13p difference for a litre of petrol between Park Don station on King Street and Cocket Hat South on North Anderson Drive.

Despite being just 3.3 miles and a 12-minute drive apart, the price for fuel was 181.9p per litre on Anderson Drive and 194.9p at King Street, with there been a 10p difference in diesel, at 187.9p and 197.9p respectively.

Why do fuel prices vary?

According to the RAC, prices can vary dramatically from region to region and even in towns that are only a few miles apart, with it sometimes even being cheaper in rural areas compared to urban ones.

Local retail dynamics also play a part, with prices very often driven by the presence of supermarkets keen to compete on price or an independent forecourt retailer that is determined to offer the cheapest fuel.
