North-east craft beer sensation Brew Toon is hoping to expand into Aberdeen by resurrecting a long-closed pub as its first bar.
The Peterhead firm has lodged proposals with the city council for the Holburn Street building, with design images revealing how it would look.
As well as reviving the old bar, they want to create three “luxury” flats in a new extension.
Plans for ‘Brew Toon Malt Mill’
The Malt Mill has been closed since 2016, along with its Downstairs music venue.
The proposed venue appears to pay homage to its past, with architects Cumming and Co referring to it as “Brew Toon Malt Mill”.
They say it will be “an exclusive craft beer bar, offering high quality locally brewed craft
beers as well as ciders, wines, spirits, soft drinks and street food”.
The firm adds: “As well as local goods, it will also stock some of the best craft beers from around the UK and further afield, which will be showcased in unique and informative tasting events.”
In seeking permission for the change, Cummings and Co tells the council the scheme will “reuse a neglected existing building, respectfully restoring it back to its former glory”.
Blueprints show the venue would have stools lined along the bar, four tables for four and four tables for two.
There will be more seating in parts of the lower ground floor, previously used as the Downstairs music venue.
Would you like to live next to Brew Toon pub?
Alongside the pub plans, Brew Toon wants to replace an attached office building at the rear on Union Glen with three “luxury” flats.
The architects say: “The site is an attractive location for residential accommodation with good transportation links to the rest of the city and Aberdeenshire.
“Our client’s vision is to upgrade the current Malt Mill building and replace the existing building at 1 Union Glen with an attractive, high end development.
“The residential units will offer a unique opportunity for luxury living within the heart of Aberdeen, which will assist in attracting young professionals to live in the city
centre.”

How Peterhead beer became toast of the north-east
Brew Toon was launched in 2017, with its “bold, adventurous” beers such as M’ango Unchained, Sour to the People and Pineapple Pils winning an army of loyal fans.
It opened a bottle shop on Queen Street in Peterhead last summer, with a tasting room at the back.
Their range is already on sale in some Aberdeen bars, and staff exhibit their wares regularly at festivals and events.
