The Met Office has issued an amber warning for the north of Scotland ahead of predicted lightning storms and hurricane force winds.
The warning covers tomorrow and Friday when “phenomenal” waves are expected off the Hebrides and the west of Scotland.
The amber warning is in place for Caithness, Sutherland, Skye, Ross-shire and Lochaber until midday on Friday.
However, the rest of north will not escape the harsh weather as the Met Office has issued a separate yellow “be aware” warning with winds of up to 80mph predicted.
A Met Office spokesman said: “The north will bear the brunt of the weather.
“The winds will gradually ease off on Friday but there will be potential disruption to transport and power supplies, as well as possible structural damage and huge waves.”
The winds are predicted as a powerful jet stream surges in from the Atlantic, triggering the amber warnings of very strong winds.
People are warned to prepare for disruption to transport as well as power supplies and the possibility of structural damage. Very large waves may also lead to dangerous conditions along some coasts, the Met Office said.
