Temperatures could plummet to -10C – the lowest this winter – in parts of the north-east and Moray this weekend.
The alert comes after winds of up to 80mph battered the region, cutting power, closing roads and halting trains in their tracks, yesterday.
A Met Office yellow “be aware” warning for snow and ice is in place for Aberdeenshire and Moray today and will remain valid until noon tomorrow.
A severe weather warning for wind was also in force until 3am this morning as gusts of between 60-70mph battered the area for more than a day.
Police closed the A90 Aberdeen to Peterhead road, near Foveran Primary School, in both directions at 3pm when a low voltage wire came off a pylon and landed on the route, knocking out power to 25 nearby properties.
A Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) spokeswoman said: “There was a low voltage wire down so the police assisted us by closing down the road.
“The power went off at 2.49pm and was restored by 3.51pm.”
Rail services in the north-east were also disrupted due to tree branches on the line between Keith and Huntly.
The obstructions were noticed just after 10.30am and delayed trains between Aberdeen and Inverness until 1.30pm.
A number of roads were blocked by wind and snow, including the A93 from Braemar to Blairgowrie, the B974 from Banchory to Fettercairn, the A939 Cock Bridge to Tomintoul and the B976 Crathie to Gairnshiel.
The A95 Aberlour to Craigellachie road was closed due to a fallen tree from 11am until 3pm.
Up to six inches of snow is expected on higher ground in Speyside and western Aberdeenshire throughout today and tomorrow morning.
Another two-and-a-half inches could also lie in “localised” inland areas of the north-east.
Aberdeen Met Office meteorologist, Stuart Brooks, said: “Into the weekend it is going to be pretty cold. The coldest areas are most likely to be in Speyside, Aviemore and the north-west Highlands, but Braemar could be down to -8C and it could be even colder than that in Speyside at around -10C.
“The lowest so far (this winter) has been -9C on December 27 at Cromdale, while Braemar was between -8.5C and -8.3C, but it is going to get lower than that over the next few days.
“Saturday, Sunday and Monday are all options for beating these records.”
