An Aberdeen student has been ordered to pay compensation after he carried out an unprovoked attack on a reveller days after Christmas.
Robert Lawrie appeared at the city’s sheriff court yesterday and admitted assaulting Andrew McGovern on December 27 after he accidently bumped into him on the dance floor at Institute.
The court heard the 21-year-old engineering student had been dancing in the packed club when he felt an elbow banging into him.
Fiscal depute Sandy Hutchison said he retaliated by turning round and punching Mr McGovern twice to the face.
Representing Lawrie, of Kildrummy Road, Aberdeen, solicitor Christopher Maitland said the attack was completely out of character for his client.
He said he had been extremely drunk that night and would never normally have behaved in that manner.
Mr McGovern was not seriously injured as a result of the assault.
Sheriff Walter Mercer said he had taken note of the fact that Lawrie was a student and “wouldn’t have a lot of money sloshing around”, and made a compensation order of £100.
