Usually, when a joke is repeated, it becomes less funny. But that’s not the case when it comes to Joe Lycett.
The comedian made a career out of commenting on his past stunts and tweets, taking them from “witty” to “hilarious”.
Earlier this year, as we were all waiting to read the Sue Gray report, the nation’s favourite prankster shared a fake version of the document looking into parties held in Downing Street during the pandemic.
Heavily publicised at the time, Joe told his Music Hall audience how his fake report – which contained ridiculous findings including made-up names of WhatsApp groups such as “Definitely A Meeting” and “Down It Street” – was considered plausible and caused MPs to panic.
He also reprised and commented on his other famous stunt – inviting the Lord Mayor of Birmingham to open his new kitchen extension. While it started as a joke, Joe explained and showed screenshots and photos of what he had to do to persuade Yvonne Mosquito to attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Joe Lycett on influencers, fake Sue Gray report and more
But before the main event, Joe greeted his north-east fans and introduced his support act Johnny Candon who had a great rapport with the audience. He told anecdotes about his family life and jokingly called out a few comedy lovers who arrived in the middle of his set before welcoming Joe back to the stage.
The artist formerly known as Hugo Boss started off his “More, More, More! How Do You Lycett? How Do You Lycett?” gig by talking about influencers.
Since he has a huge social media following, companies often ask Joe to promote their products. While this is something he’s not willing to do, he does like free things… so you can bet he found a clever way to frustrate companies and keep their freebies.
Joe previously presented BBC’s The Great Sewing Bee and his consumer show Joe Lycett’s Got Your Back. But he’s probably best known for his genius – and hilarious – way to get out of a parking ticket – a story he told on Channel 4 mash-up show 8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown.
Keeping jokes a secret
Usually, when you’re a fan of a comedian (or any other artist) and you persuade your friend or family member to accompany you to their live show, you – the person familiar with their work – end up having a slightly better time than your loved one.
But not knowing what Joe recently got up to may actually be an advantage when you come see him live. So go ahead and encourage your friends to book tickets.
That being said, the highlight of the evening was undoubtedly a stunt that Joe had worked on for quite some time and one he asked his fans not to post/write about. So let’s just say he was inspired by this quote: “Sometimes if you want something to exist, you have to make it yourself”.
Funny and heart-warming, he received a well-deserved round of applause.
