A north-east MSP has called for improvements to disabled provisions at Scotland’s football stadiums.
Mark McDonald wants to see better amenities, such as accessible toilets, for disabled people attending games.
He has written to all 12 Scottish Premiership clubs, as well as Rangers, Hearts, and Hibs, to highlight the benefits of the upgrade.
The Donside MSP made the move after the introduction of Changing Places toilets inside Murrayfield Stadium at Edinburgh.
Led by disability charity PAMIS, the Changing Places campaign aims to have toilets which are fully accessible for people with more complex learning disabilities and serious impairments such as spinal injuries.
The new facilities mean there is more room for disabled supporters.
In addition, there will also be changing tables installed in the cubicles, which will prevent carers having to change people on the floor.
Last night Mr McDonald said it was “vital” football grounds followed Murrayfield’s example.
He said: “The current disabled toilets, while fine for many, are simply not enough for those people with more complex difficulties.
“Football clubs seriously need to have a look and see if they can install these facilities, to ensure people affected can have a much more relaxed and enjoyable experience.”
Mr McDonald’s request has been met with support by some of the region’s top clubs.
Peter Swanson, director of operations at Ross County, said the club would explore whether the stadium’s disabled facilities could be upgraded.
He said: “At present we have disabled toilets and space for changing, also allocated space in one of our boxes, by arrangement, for someone who cannot be outside in the designated disabled areas.
“As a club embedded in the community, we are well aware of the need to ensure that wherever possible all sections of our community can access and enjoy football and the match day experience.”
A spokesman for Aberdeen FC added: “It’s no secret that Aberdeen will have to move stadium in the near future and this is exactly the type of facility we would be looking at incorporating into the new stadium.”
No one from Inverness Caledonian Thistle was available for comment.
