The Met Office has issued a warning for three days of wintry weather ahead for the north and north-east.
A yellow ‘be aware’ warning is in force over the area today, tomorrow and Wednesday.
A met office forecaster said: “A shallow area of low pressure forming near Iceland will move southeast towards Scotland later on Monday and will push its associated occluded fronts across northern Britain overnight and during the Tuesday morning.
“With a cold northerly airstream already established, precipitation will be mainly of snow, with any rain mainly confined to western coasts and some low lying areas of Northern Ireland.”
He said that the snow was predicted to lessen on Wednesday.
He added: “A very cold air mass is likely to continue to affect much of the UK during Wednesday.
“Along eastern coasts of both Scotland and England, snow showers are likely in a strong northeasterly wind.
“Snow showers are likely to ease through the day across eastern Scotland and northeast England, whilst conversely shower activity is likely to increase across other parts of eastern England, with some snow showers being driven well inland at times.”
