A north east firm has stepped in to help raise £70,000 to build an orphanage in Ghana.
Aberdeen-based Exceed has just five months to raise the funds needed to create a home for 45 orphaned children who were rescued from child labour or lost their parents to AIDS.
The company’s charitable trust will team up with Becky’s Foundation in Ghana, which was housing the youngsters when they were given an eviction notice from the rented premises.
The orphanage has temporally moved to a nearby day centre, but the foundation is hoping to build its own home.
However, it does not receive government funding and is relying solely on support from donations and volunteers to help it meet its goal.
Money for the new dwelling will be raised through a series of projects led by Exceed and some employees will take part in the Ride the North two-day cycle challenge in August.
The well management business has staff already deployed in Ghana where they regularly deliver supplies of clothes and school materials.
Ian Mills, director of Exceed, said: “We don’t just want to hand over a cheque, we want to give back to the communities in which we work and we are committed to make a lasting and meaningful difference in the children’s lives.
“Our role is to change circumstances, so the children can fulfil their potential.”
Exceed employs 20 people at its base in Aberdeen’s Bon Accord Square.
