Police have issued a fresh appeal for witnesses to a fireball crash on a busy north-east road.
The two-vehicle collision happened on the B979 South Deeside Road, just west of the Deeside Holiday Park, on Tuesday night.
A 19-year-old man had to be pulled from the burning wreckage of his Ford Ka by passers-by, while a 22-year-old woman was also left with life-threatening injuries and had to be cut free from her Ford Fiesta.
Both casualties remain in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary in a serious condition.
The road was closed for more than 12 hours while officers cleared the scene and pieced together what happened in the moments leading up to the accident at around 10pm.
The man – who had been travelling from Aberdeen – suffered life-threatening injuries, including fractures to his arm and both legs. His car was left a burned-out shell.
Officers are now trying to trace the driver of a dark 4×4 with a personalised registration.
The car was in the area at the time of the crash, travelling west, and the motorist may have seen something which could help police with their inquiries.
Anyone with any information should contact police on 101.
