After enjoying several weeks of fair weather, the north and north-east of Scotland could by hit with huge snowfalls predicted for this weekend.
The Met Office has issued a severe weather warning for snow and ice in the Highlands and Islands from today, with the north-east also set for winter weather from Sunday into Monday.
An Atlantic frontal system is moving across Scotland this weekend causing temperatures to drop.
The warning for the Highlands will begin tonight with snow, sleet and rain all possible and ice likely on the roads.
The Met Office warned that snow is likely to settle even at the lowest levels in the north, with between 1.1ins and 2.4ins possible tonight and more throughout the coming days.
The north-east and Moray will be worst hit across Sunday and Monday, with two severe weather warnings coming into place.
The first warning starts at 6am on Sunday and stays in place until 5pm on Monday, with the likelihood of around 2ins expected in some places.
Another warning will be enforced from Monday at 00.05am and will stay in place until 11.55pm, with around 3.1ins likely – even at low levels.
Just under 6ins could land at higher levels in Grampian.
The Met Office state: “The public should be aware of difficult driving conditions and the risk of disruption to transport.
“The public should be aware of these wintry hazards. A plunge of cold air across the region will bring wintry showers, falling as sleet and snow at times to low levels.
“Settling levels will generally be higher, ranging from around 328ft in northern Scotland.”
