A procession of animal-shaped willow lanterns will weave their way through the streets of Aboyne next weekend.
Residents from across Deeside have been making the handmade lanterns to mark bonfire season, and do something in addition to the fireworks.
It has been organised by the Aboyne Artist in Residence community project.
The project aims to deliver events and activities to bring the local community together and boost their wellbeing.
The lantern parade will set off from the Aboyne Community Shed and heads down the village green, down Ballater Road at 6.30pm on November 12.
‘A space for people to come together’
Community volunteer Sintija Sviklane said the lantern workshops over the October holidays had proved exceptionally popular.
She said: “The lantern workshops create a space for people to come together and participate.
“I think it’s important when it’s dark and cold outside, especially in places which are remote and there are not so many things going on.”
It was partly funded by the Communities Mental Health and Wellbeing Fund, a £120 million Scottish Government initiative to improve mental health after lockdown.
Free community art workshops
Aboyne Artist in Residence runs free art classes and events for Deeside and Donside residents over the age of 16 at Aboyne and Mid-Deeside Community Shed.
Mrs Sviklane said: “We do a few kinds of bigger events throughout the year. The lanterns are just one of many.
“We have been going for almost 13 months now but are looking to get funding to stay open for the long term.”
