Carly Scott has been working with charities since she was in sixth year at St Machar Academy.
Now a second year student at Aberdeen University, the 19-year-old has set herself the ambitious task of raising £1,500 in just a few months.
This summer, Miss Scott from Aberdeen will take part in a project with Childreach International, an organisation dedicated to securing children’s basic human rights.
The construction venture – The Big Build Tanzania 2015 – is a two-week expedition that will involve the history and politics undergraduate working with locals in the African country and learning about their culture.
One of the biggest challenges for the teenager is that she is currently living and studying in Holland, making it harder to round up her usual supporters.
As part of the Erasmus Programme, Miss Scott attends Utrecht University, where will take her exams this spring.
She said: “I have a huge target to try and achieve and it has been made more difficult with being out of the country.
“I only got around to applying for the exchange at the last minute.
“I actually missed the deadline but I was able to get a place through Clearing which was really, really, lucky.
“Holland was one of the few places left to go to but it’s worked out well as I am enjoying it.”
She is due to return home to Aberdeen at the start of July, and is considering running a marathon to help gather the £1,500 she needs for the project.
One third of the money will be spent on materials, another for trip expenses and the last slice donated to Childreach International.
The charity has bases in the UK, Tanzania, Bangladesh, India, Nepal and Morocco and prioritises projects that focus on child education.
Miss Scott became involved with the group through Aberdeen University, where it recruits volunteers from across different years.
She said: “I chose this particular programme as it allowed to me to have the whole summer free to work on the project.
“Since starting uni I haven’t had the chance to do the fundraising I did at school so it’s nice to be doing it again as I did really miss it.
“I feel it is important for students to engage in these trips because it creates individuals who will be dedicated to charity work and children’s rights for life.”
