A folk festival which brought together some of the country’s top traditional musicians is in the running for an award.
Braemar Folk Festival took place last month, with performances from the likes of Dougie MacLean, Joshua Burnside and Eryn Rae, winner of the BBC Young Traditional Musician of the Year Award 2022.
Now organisers are celebrating after being shortlisted for event of the year in the MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards.
It is a major coup for the committee, who only came up with the idea of the festival during lockdown. This was their second year of the event, which is mainly held at St Margaret’s Church and other smaller venues around Braemar.
Winners of the awards will be announced at Caird Hall in Dundee on December 4.
Voting is currently open to the public to select their favourite organisation and act.
‘Cosy, autumn, music festival’
Festival organiser Fergus Mutch said: “We are absolutely delighted to be nominated as event of the year in this year’s Trad Awards.
“It’s testament to our dedicated volunteers, enthusiastic audiences, the whole team at St Margaret’s Braemar and brilliant local partners and sponsors that an event in just its second year running is getting noticed far and wide.
“The great thing about the Braemar Folk Festival is that from the moment people arrive in the village, until the minute they leave there’s live music for three days solid — concerts, workshops for all ages, jam sessions, impromptu tunes in pubs, cafes and any space available.
“We’re very proud to have established a great, cosy, autumn music festival — right in the heart of the Cairngorms — which is going from strength to strength and will be back even bigger and better for 2023.”
Plans are already under way for next year’s Braemar Folk Festival, which will run from October 6 to 8.
